Abstract

958,522. Distilling saline water. C. S. GALE. Feb. 28, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 5059/61. Heading B1B. Saline water is distilled by spraying it from nozzles in pipes 9 into hot combustion gases flowing through chamber 1 which contains parallel baffles 8 arranged in zig-zag formation extending at right angles to the direction of flow of the gases ; the water is instantly evaporated by contact with the hot gases, and the mixture of gases and vapour flows to condenser 13, from which the warm condensate, i.e. distilled water, is withdrawn through pipe 14. Water is also sprayed through nozzles 11 against baffles 8 so as to remove saline deposits. Saline residues are removed from chamber 1 through pipe 12. The hot combustion gases are produced in gas turbine plant 6, in which gas or oil is burned, and are supplied to chamber 1 through pipe 21. If desired, the fuel may be burned in burners 7 at the fore-end of chamber 1. The saline water to be treated is pumped through condenser 13, where it is preheated, before it is sprayed into the chamber 1. The mixture of hot gases and water vapour passes through wire-mesh filter 15 before it reaches the condenser 13. The warm condensate may. be passed to tank 23 which is maintained under reduced pressure by Venturi-tube 28, operated by the compressed effluent gases from chamber 1. Some of the condensate evaporates, and the remainder is chilled. The chilled condensate is withdrawn from the system through pipe 26. The turbine is used to drive the pumps and compressors.
