Abstract
642,215. Gas turbine plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 29, 1948, No. 11739. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group II] In a combustion product gas turbine plant a substance likely to condense and deposit in the turbine is separated out in a centrifugal or other settling chamber in which the working-fluid is brought to, or below, the dew point of that substance. Preferably the working fluid enters the chamber at a temperature 10‹C above the dew point and is cooled in the chamber to 10‹C below the dew point. Substances with different dew points may be separated out in two or more chambers arranged in series. The cooling may be effected by a spray of seawater and admixture with cooler air. Hot gases pass from a combustion chamber 3 to a cooling and separating chamber 5 before passing to the turbine 6. The gases on their way to the chamber 5 traverse one pass of a heat-exchanger 4 and on their way from that chamber traverse the other path of the exchanger 4. The air supply from the compressor 1 to the combustion chamber passes through a heat exchanger 2 heated by exhaust gases from the turbine. A branch pipe 7 supplies the cooling air to the separator 5. This pipe is fitted with a control valve 7c and a cross-connection to the outlet pipe from the combustion chamber is fitted with a valve 8. A sea-water connection 19 is fitted to the separator.
