Abstract

1,025,921. Distilling water. RICHARDSON, WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. April 13,1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1585/61. Heading B1B. Saline water is distilled in an apparatus comprising a series of flash chambers 14, a series of condenser-chambers 10, a direct-contact heatexchanger 28 wherein a stream of the saline water is contacted with hot combustion gases, and an indirect-contact heat-exchanger 18 wherein another stream of the saline water is heated by steam supplied by boiler 20. The saline water-to-bedistilled first flows through tube 12 where it is preheated by the vapours from the flash chambers, introduced into the chambers 10 through pipes 16. Part of the water is passed through pipe 32 and sprayed into heat-exchanger 28 where it flows down against a rising stream of hot gases, produced by igniting gas at inlet 30. Another stream of the saline water, which is warmer than the stream in pipe 32, is passed into heat-exchanger 18 via a continuation of pipe 12. The two streams of hot water, withdrawn from the two heat-exchangers, are reunited in pipe 24, and introduced into the first flash chamber. Distilled water is withdrawn from the chambers 10. Non-distilled water is discharged from the last flash chamber via pipe 38. The stream of water which passes into heatexchanger 28 should not be at too high a temperature as otherwise the loss of steam through vent 34 may be excessive.
