Abstract
980,659. Distilling water. SULZER BROS. Ltd. April 18, 1963 [April 18, 1962], No. 15394/63. Heading B1B. Fresh water is obtained from salt water by feeding it from tank 103 into distillation unit 82-85 wherein part of the water is distilled and the distillate (i.e. fresh water) is collected in pipe 93, and some of the salt water is fed through pipe 22 to a heater 23 and then into a flash evaporator 26, 30, 33 ; the steam from the flash chambers is conducted, via pipes which pass through superheater 37, into turbine 45, and the steam leaving the turbine is condensed to obtain additional fresh water. The salt water withdrawn from the last stage 33 of the flash evaporator is passed through pipe 34 into the first stage 85 of the distillation unit. In the apparatus shown, the distillation unit is a multiple-effect apparatus, but a vapourcompression still or a multi-stage flash evaporator may be used instead. Heater 23, superheater 37 and the first stage 85 of the multiple effect apparatus are heated by a stream of hot gas produced by gas turbine 49 and burner 53. In an alternative arrangement, the heating medium is circulated around a closed circuit and is heated by a nuclear reactor plant. Before the salt water is introduced into the first effect 85 of the distillation unit, it is preheated in recuperators 82<SP>1</SP>-85<SP>1</SP> by the vapours leaving the four effects. Steam flashed off from the distilled water in pipe 93 may be introduced into the heating-coils of the multiple-effect apparatus. The steam generated in the last effect 82 and the steam from the turbine 45 are condensed in the same condenser 120. The salt water is heated in heat-exchanger 23 in the form of a film and in the presence of pressurized inert gas, which is introduced into the top of the heat-exchanger. Means are described for maintaining the pressure in the heat-exchanger substantially constant.
