Abstract
1307717 Evaporators, flash type; desalination of water HITACHI SHIPBUILDING & ENG KK 1 May 1970 [1 May 1969 (2) 1 July 1969] 21115/70 Heading B1B Flash evaporation is carried out in chamber 15 having an inclined bottom 19 extending downwardly from the inlet 17 of the liquid to be evaporated; and turbulence is imparted to the liquid by curved deflector plates 20 arranged in staggered positions on the bottom 19, the plates being inclined to the general direction of liquid-flow. The apparatus may be used to produce fresh water from sea water which is pumped through conduit 14, condenser tubes 16 and heater 18 into the flash chamber 15. The flashed vapours condense on the outside of tubes 16, and the condensate (i.e. fresh water) is withdrawn by pump 28. In Fig. 4 (not shown), two such flash chambers are connected in series. In another flash distillation plant (Fig. 5, not shown), sea water having been preheated by passing it through the condenser tube of the flash chamber is further heated by passing it through the condenser tube of a steam turbine; the sea water then being introduced into the flash chamber. Part of the residual brine, withdrawn from the flash chamber, may be pumped back to the turbine condenser tube via a valve which is controlled by the temperature of the sea water flowing to the flash chamber. The apparatus is operated under high vacuum; and may be disposed below sea level.
