[Also in Groups XI and XIII] An air or gas heater or other heat exchanger comprises an outer shell 10 and two concentric inner shells 35, 41 separated from the shell and one another by spaces which are divided by corrugated members 37, 43 into longitudinal passages, fluid flowing through the two sets of passages being heated by heat derived from the interior of the innermost shell 41. In the form shown, the two sets of passages communicate witn one another at one end, and the innermost shell is made in sections of successively increasing diameter. Air flows from an inlet 65 through the outer set of passages 36, and then partly through an annular air register 16 for combustion with fuel from a burner 31, and partly through the inner set of passages 40. Some of the air in these passages enters the combustion chamber through the annular gaps 44, which may have associated baffles 45, 46. The proportion of air passing to the burner and to the second set of passages is controlled by an annular damper 53 carried by screw-threaded rods 54. Louvres in the air register are adjustable simultaneously by a handle 20. In a modification, the two annular sets of passages between the shells do not communicate with one another. The air to be heated is introduced at the burner end and flows through the inner set of passages, and another gas or liquid flows through the outer set of passages. Liquid, gaseous or pulverulent fuel may be used.
