618,280. Tubular heat-exchangers; regenerators. AKT.-GES. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN. Sept. 20,1946. No. 28259. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1945. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] In a tubular heatexchanger for preheating a fluid medium, e.g. combustion air, by flue gases in contraflow, a vertical shell 1 is provided at its upper and lower ends with inlet and outlet headers connected by a nest of vertical tubes 3 fixed into upper and lower tube plates 11, 9, and the lower header communicates with a chimney tube 5 which is coaxial with the tube nest and is surrounded by a second tube 6, the annular space between the tubes 5, 6 communicating with the space around the tubes 3. The hot gases flow from an inlet 4 at the top end of the heat exchanger through the tubes 3, bottom header, and chimney 5, and the fluid to be heated flows from a second inlet 2 down through the annular space and up over the tubes 3 to the outlet 8. The tube plates 9, 11 are made thin to withstand thermal stresses the lower being supported on columns 10 and the upper connected to the shell 1 of the heat exchanger by a flexible length of tube 12 to allow for expansion. A part 13 of the chimney tube 5 is similarly made flexible.
