Abstract

1414524 Purifying exhaust gases S B JOHANSEN 30 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49852/72 Heading F4B Gaseous fuels and flue gases, including exhaust from I.C. engines, are burnt in the presence of excess combustion air, the air and/or the gas being heated by heat exchange from the combustion products, the temperature of both the air and the gas before coming into contact with each other being maintained above the temperature of ignition of the mixture, the air and gas being fed separately to a reaction chamber so that a surface combustion takes place between them in the reaction chamber. In the form of Fig. 1 the reaction chamber 1 is extended by an exhaust chamber 2. Combustion air is fed from line 3 through a chamber 4 surrounding the reaction chamber 1 and exhaust chamber 2 whereby it is heated before entering the reaction chamber at 6 together with the gas which enters from a gas conduit 5. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) part or all of the air enters the reaction chamber via two tangential nozzles spaced from the gas conduit and being designed to cause turbulent flow. In the form of Fig. 3 the gas and air are fed to the reaction chamber through separate long interleaved ducts 8 and 6 so that they arrive at approximately the same temperature. The air passing along the line 3 is first preheated by the hot combustion products and then further heated in chamber 4. In another form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the gas also is heated by being passed through a chamber surrounding the chamber 4 at the top end of the reaction chamber. The gas is passed into the chamber tangentially so as to cause a turbulent flow through the heating chamber. Where the apparatus is to be used for burning excess carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, the inflow chamber 4 may be surrounded by an outer pressure-proof housing 24, Fig. 5, which damps fluctuations of pressure in the exhaust. The housing is filled with a heat-insulating and sound absorbing material 22 and the wall of chamber 4 is perforated at 21. The gases to be burned enter tangentially into chamber 16 and pass through a number of jets into the reaction chamber, each jet being surrounded by a circular air jet. Air enters at 3 and is heated in chamber 4 and at 27 further air enters the exhaust stream to reduce the temperature. In Fig. 7, the air is fed through openings 3<SP>1</SP> to a heat exchanger in chamber 2 formed by a number of thin pipes which end tangentially in the chamber 4. The amount of air entering is controlled by slide 28. In another form (Fig. 8, not shown) the heatexchanger pipes 30 are replaced by a chamber surrounding the exhaust chamber 2, there being a number of tubes crossing this chamber leading to the openings 21 to the absorbent filling 22. The amount of air provided should match the volume of gas to be burned, the air blower being coupled to the main shaft to the engine.
