Abstract

[Also in Division F1] The invention relates to an apparatus comprising a combustion chamber and a rotary regenerative heat exchanger, the apparatus being suitable for burning the combustible component of a stream of gas of relatively low calorific value, the rotary wall of the heat exchanger passing successively through the combustion gas outlet duct and the combustible gas inlet duct. The apparatus comprises a rotatable cylindrical chamber defined by a cylindrical wall 4, a lower end wall 12 and an upper end wall or cover 9. The lower end wall is connected to a shaft 13 by which the assembly is rotated. The cylindrical wall 4 is lined with refractory bricks 6 and the lower and upper walls 12, 9 are lined with refractory material 15, the cylindrical wall being formed with passages 3 and the upper and lower walls being formed with passages 21. The upper wall 9 is non-rotatable. The refractory bricks 6 are acted on by springs 7 so as to hold the bricks together. The rotary assembly is disposed within a fixed casing 2 having an inlet B for gas containing a combustible component, such as upcast air from a mine, and an outlet C for combustion gases which may pass to the turbine of a gas turbine plant. A removable coverplate 8 is secured to the casing 2. A fuel supply duct 14 projects into the combustion chamber A defined by the rotary assembly 12, 4, for the supply of fuel at starting and possibly at other times. A portion of the gas containing combustible component is supplied through inlets 10, 11 for cooling purposes. The gas entering at B passes through the openings 3 in the walls 4, 5 being preheated thereby and then passing into the combustion chamber A where combustion occurs. The hot combustion gases discharge from the chamber A through the passages 3 thereby heating the walls 4, 5, the gases then passing to the point of use. The refractory bricks may be of arcuate or trapezoidal form with passages extending therethrough. The invention may be applied to the combustion of combustible components in exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine.
