Abstract
A refractory lined enclosure for receiving molten material has the refractory heated to high temp. by combusted gases. The enclosure is provided with an air-cooled cover which mixes the air with exhaust gas emitted by a burner secured to the cover. The cover then directs the mixed gas, after its passage through heat exchangers, towards a second enclosure concentric with the first. The assembly enables the consumption of the gas required for combustion to be reduced. In addition the assembly allows the use of gases of lower combustibility than conventionally, enables surveillance devices to be installed in the cover and enables the gas to be ignited electrically. The enclosure is e.g. a converter or electric furnace.
