Abstract

<PICT:0631525/III/1> Iron and steel pickling liquor is continuously purified and revivified by causing the hot liquor with suspended crystalline matter to pass up a barometric column 2 having a cooling jacket 13 at a velocity exceeding that of the descent of the ferrous sulphate crystals in the liquor, the overflow being further cooled by evaporation under high vacuum applied at 6. The vapours evolved are condensed by sulphuric acid sprayed in at 7, the diluted acid from condenser 5 passing down leg 8 to the tank 1. The liquor in tank 1 may be at 50-70 DEG C., and it may be necessary to cool it to 25 DEG C. on entering column 2. Ferrous sulphate crystals entrained or formed on cooling in column 2 overflow with liquor into a conical separator 10 whence they descend the leg 17 to a conical sump 18. An airlift 21 transfers the sludge to a separator, e.g. centrifuge 23. The cooling jacket 13 is supplied with acid overflowing from the separator 10, filtrate pumped at 26 from the separator 23 and cold water at 29. A separate water-cooled jacket portion is, however, preferably fitted. The column 2, the jacket 13 and the legs 8 and 17 have heights to correspond to the gravities of the liquids they hold. A degree of vacuum of 29 inches of mercury is employed. A modification is shown wherein two columns 2 discharge into a common tank 10.
