Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain cyclopentadiene by the liquid phase decomposition of dicyclopentadiene using silicon oil as a high b.p. oil thereby facilitating the separation of the polymers and the silicon oil in the bottom liquid.
CONSTITUTION: In the thermal decomposition of dicyclopentadiene to give cyclopentadiene, the dicyclopentadiene is treated with silicon oil (e.g. liquid polymethylpolysiloxane polymers) maintained at the decomposition temp. of dicyclopentadiene, i.e. at ca. 140W240°C, preferably 150W220°C. The produced cyclopentadiene is taken out from the reaction zone. The silicon oil is easily separated and regenerated from the high b.p. reaction residue containing the silicon oil by settling or filtration.
EFFECT: The necessary amount of the high b.p. oil is small, and the oil can be easily handled.
