Abstract
The invention comprises a process for recovering maleic anhydride from a gaseous mixture containing maleic anhydride and water by cooling said mixture to a partial condensation temperature whereby a part of the maleic anhydride is condensed, centrifugally separating liquid maleic anhydride from the mixture, and continuously withdrawing as separate streams from the separation zone gas and condensed liquid maleic anhydride so that the withdrawn liquid maleic anhydride is substantially free from solid maleic acid. The surface area of liquid in contact with the gaseous mixture is preferably kept sufficiently low so that the content of maleic acid in the liquid is substantially within the solubility range of maleic acid in maleic anhydride at the partial condensation temperature. Centrifugal separation is preferably effected in a zone which in form is substantially a vertical cylinder with a constricted lower region connected to a liquid removal zone, the highest level of the liquid being at or below the lower end of the constricted region. The condensation temperature may be 52 to 75 DEG C. and the pressure 0 to 400 p.s.i.g. The condensation temperature is preferably higher than the dew-point temperature of water at the partial condensation pressure.
