Abstract

<PICT:0630884/III/1> The vapour from the top of a column in which selective absorption or extractive distillation is taking place, is brought into intimate contact in an isolated zone with the absorbing or extracting liquid before the latter is fed to the column, the heat of solution or mixing being removed by a cooling coil system. The vessel, termed a "pre-saturator," in which such heat removal is effected is preferably separate from the column but may be an extension of the column or be arranged within it. A presaturator comprises sections 4, each with a perforated plate 5 above which is a nest of tubes 6 through which a cooling medium is circulated. The extracting liquid enters through pipe 9 and passes over weirs 7 and 8 and into the next section through pipe 10 and so on down the pre-saturator to outlet 11 in countercurrent to the vapours, which enter by pipe 12 and bubble up through each perforated plate to their outlet 13. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates the separation of dimethylamine from a methylamines and ammonia mixture.
