1,024,571. Distillation apparatus. DESALINATION PLANTS (DEVELOPERS OF ZARCHIN PROCESS) Ltd. Jan. 1, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 39154/61. Heading BIB. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus suitable for separating potable water from sea water comprises an evaporation chamber 20 surrounded by an annular condensation chamber 50. The sea water, which is introduced through pipe 18, partially evaporates as it flows in film-form down vertical plates 156 and the inner wall 94 of chamber 20, which is maintained under reduced pressure. Owing to the partial evaporation, the sea water is cooled, and ice is formed. The mixture of ice and brine is withdrawn from chamber 20 through pipe 100, and the ice is separated from the brine. The ice is then mixed with desalinated water to form a slurry which is distributed through pipes 126 into trays 48 in chamber 50. The vapour formed in chamber 20 is conveyed by compressor 54 into chamber 50, where the vapour condenses and the ice on the trays melts. Desalinated water flows through perforations in the trays. Residual vapour is condensed on conventional cooling coils 64. The desalinated water is withdrawn from the base of chamber 50 through pipe 108. The sea water, supplied through pipe 18, is distributed from manifold 148 to the top of plates 126 and of the inner wall 94 of chamber 20 by means of conduits 152 which are open at the top and at the ends.
