823,366. Gas purifiers. DEMPSTER & SONS Ltd., R. Oct. 13, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954], No. 29455/54. Class 55 (2). A process for the removal of hydrogen sulphide from gases comprises passing the gas vertically downwards through a continuous column of purifying material containing iron oxide, the material being intermittently or continuously withdrawn from the bottom of the column while fresh material is charged to the top of the column. A vessel 11, Fig. 1, containing the purifying material 10, has an inlet 12 and outlet 13 for the gas and spaced inlets 17, 18, 19 for a gas containing oxygen. The bulk of the hydrogen sulphide in the gas is removed in zone 14 the sulphided material in this zone being subsequently oxidized in the zones 15, 16. The purifying material is removed at 11a. In a modification a tower similar to vessel 11 is provided, the gas passing therefrom to another tower which is not provided with the inlets 17 to 19. In a modification, Fig. 3, the gas enters a tower 20 which has its upper part similar to the vessel 11 the gas leaving at 23a to enter a tower 21 which is not provided with oxygen inlets. About 2% of the gas leaving outlet 25 is recycled through a pipe 41 by means of a fan 42, oxygen or a gas containing oxygen being added before it enters zone 40 at the base of tower 20. The gas passing upwardly through zone 40 mixes with the main gas near the outlet 23a. In a three-tower system the first two towers which may be either in series or in parallel are similar to tower 20, the final tower being in series with the first two being similar to tower 21. The material is removed intermittently from the base of a tower the interval between removal may be from one to five days. The residence time of the purifying material within a tower is of the order of thirty days.
