A process for the digestive treatment of sewage sludge comprises mixing raw sewage sludge with actively digesting sludge which is obtained from the sludge zone of a digestion tank, the mixing being carried out in a mixer outside the digestion tank, introducing the resultant mixture into the liquid zone of the digestion tank, withdrawing liquid from this liquid zone, and returning the withdrawn liquid both to the liquid zone and the sludge zone. In the drawing, actively digesting sludge is withdrawn from sludge zone C of digestion tank B and passed, via conduits 3 and 4 to mixer A. Raw sewage sludge is introduced into mixer A through pipe 2, and the resulting mixture is led through pipe 6 to the liquid zone D of tank B, Liquid is withdrawn from zone D through pipe 12, heated in boiler 13 and returned to tank B through pipe 14 and nozzles 15 and 16. Tank B is provided with a partition 7 having a plurality of openings 8 around the periphery thereof and a gas holder 10 at the top thereof. Gas generated in zones C and D is prevented from passing through openings 8 by means of projection 9 on the internal periphery of tank B. Zone E forms a liquid-clarifying zone and the clarified liquid is carried away through pipe 17.
