Abstract

565,728. Treating gases with liquids. KALOUS, M. J. March 5, 1943, No. 3652. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group III] Apparatus for absorbing nitrogen oxides from gases by passing in progressive stages in countercurrent to nitric acid of decreasing strength, includes means for introducing live steam into the gas in one or more of the later stages. Direct or indirect cooling of the gases may follow the introduction of steam. As shown in Fig. 1, gas enters at 22 and passes through packing material 5, 6, 7, 8 in four vertical towers, leaving the system at 26. Water is admitted at 17 and flows as weak acid from tower to tower through pipes 20, 19, 18 and out at 21. The acid in each tower is circulated by pumps 9, 10, 11, 12 through coolers 13, 14, 15, 16. Live steam is admitted through distributer 27. Apparatus is also described for carrying out the process under superatmospheric pressure by bubbling the gas through the liquid in a partitioned absorption column or a number of superposed drums. In the former case steam is introduced into each of the two top sections, a cooling coil being positioned in the uppermost section, and in the latter case steam is introduced into the second and third drums from the top, and cooling water flows over the exterior of the top drum.
