753,102. Treating tar-water emulsions. KAGCHELLAND, D. M. J. Aug. 10, 1954, No. 23243/54. Class 55(2). Emulsions, particularly tarwater emulsions, are treated in a continuous manner by preheating the emulsion with steam and then thoroughly mixing the preheated emulsion with the steam. The water may be removed from a broken tar-water emulsion by centrifuging. In apparatus for carrying out the treatment the tar emulsion is fed through an inlet 1 into an elongated cylindrical treatment vessel 12 provided with baffles 4 and 5 adjacent the inlet 1 and staggered baffles 6 along its length. Steam is fed from a conduit 2 into a chamber 13 and impinges on the baffle 4, emulsion in contact with the baffle being thereby preheated. From the chamber 13 steam passes under the baffle 5 and mixes with the preheated emulsion, broken emulsion is withdrawn at 3. A chamber 11 serves to absorb pressure variations within the treatment vessel 12. In modified forms of the apparatus the baffles 6 may be in the form of sector-shaped plates, plates with circular openings, grids or be arranged as a continuous spiral member mounted on an axially arranged rod.
