Abstract

<PICT:0446708/III/1> The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the treatment of oils and fats with granular active carbon in apparatus in which the oil or fat is passed through a drum containing the carbon and rotated at such a speed that the carbon is subjected to attrition adequate to constantly renew the surface so as to maintain the desired degree of treatment. As shown, the drum d which contains the carbon e is supported on stationary inlet and outlet pipes b<1>, b<11> and rotated by means of a belt pulley h or a toothed wheel i. The inlet pipe b<1> is connected to a downwardly bent perforated pipe g<1> and the outlet pipe b<11> to a similar upwardly bent pipe g<11>. The flow of liquid is such as to carry away the solid reaction products. The drum may be driven hydraulically by the flowing liquid. The drum may be connected in a byepass of the main flow, so that part of the liquid is treated and then returned to the main flow. The liquid may be passed through a filter after leaving the drum. The drum may be fitted with vertical partitions. Specification 446,662, [Group I], is referred to. This subject-matter so far as it relates to the treatment of oils and fats does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
