[Class 46] Liquid-treating apparatus comprises a tank, one or more inclined passageways in the lower portion of the tank formed by partition means, and leading to an upper chamber above the partition means, where baffles deflect the liquid rising through the passageways inwardly, a central passageway through the partition means together with an impelling device for causing a closed circulation, means for introducing liquid to be treated adjacent the impelling device, means for introducing a precipitating reagent, an upper outlet for treated liquid, and a waste outlet. As shown in Fig. 2, water to be treated enters a cylinder 40 by a pipe 14 and chemical by a pipe 50. These are mixed with slurry remaining from previous treatment by arms 30 on a rotating shaft 25, and the mixture is forced upwards by a propeller 29 over the top of a cylinder 40 and falls within an outer cylinder 42. It then rises under a partition 44 and flows through an annular gap 48, and is caused to move radially inwards above the partition 44 by a peripheral baffle 49. Clarified liquid rises to an outlet weir 16, while slurry formed, together with some of the liquid, flows back into the cylinder 40 through pipes 53, which may be four in number to ensure an excess of slurry over water to be treated. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the inverted conical partition 79 is attached to the lower end of the inner cylinder 75, and the propeller 29 is rotated in a direction to cause downward flow in the cylinder 75. The partition 79 may be replaced by a number of radial tubes of rectangular cross-section, the depth of which diminishes outwardly from the centre. Specifications 501,128 and 527,908 are referred to.
