Abstract

<PICT:0850130/III/1> Liquids, including emulsions, are treated with sonic vibrations generated in an apparatus of the rotor stator type, in which the rotor has a different number of openings, and preferably a smaller number, than the stator. In a suitable apparatus for converting a coarse suspension into an emulsion, a rotor member 11 is mounted within a stator which has a larger number of equally spaced channels 17 than in the stator 16. The liquid is fed into the centre of the rotor and flows through the channels 16 until it meets the stator/rotor interface when flow is interrupted until a stator channel comes into register with the rotor outlet. High intensity cavitation results which disperses the particles. In a modification, the stator conduits are curved, and a number are longer than the other by 1/2 wave length at the frequency generated. This form of apparatus may be applied to the coagulation of suspensions.
