Abstract

Titanium or an alloy of titanium and a volatile metal of the group consisting of zinc and lead is produced by reacting titanium-bearing material at elevated temperature and preferably at reduced partial pressure with the support of one or more halides of the group consisting of chlorides, bromides and iodides of the volatile metals, thus forming the vapour of the volatile metal and a stable titanium halide, leading the resultant vapours into a condensing zone which is provided with an excess of the volatile metal so as to convert the titanium halide into the halide of the volatile metal and an alloy of titanium with volatile metal which condenses and evaporating all or any desired amount of volatile metal from the alloy. The halide of the volatile metal used is preferably zinc bromide or chloride. The excess volatile metal in the condenser may (a) be present in the form of a liquid pool, (b) be introduced as a liquid or vapour stream at a predetermined rate relative to the rate of entry of and in countercurrent to the reaction vapours to ensure complete conversion of these vapours, or (c) be passed over the titanium bearing material together with the volatile metal halide vapour and the resultant mixed vapour led to the condenser. An inert gas, e.g. argon at reduced pressure may be used to carry the volatile metal halide over the titanium-bearing material. Specification 666,869 is referred to.
