Abstract

In a process for distilling titanium from titanium-bearing material by the intermediate formation of its normally stable halide, the vapour of a halide of the group consisting of alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides, bromides and iodides and the mixed alkali metal titanous fluorides is contacted and reacted with the titanium-bearing material at elevated temperature and the resultant vapour mixture led into a cooler zone where it is reconverted into metallic titanium and the original halide. The process is preferably carried out at reduced pressure and with the halide vapour unsaturated with respect to the condensed halide. The reaction temperature may vary from 1150-1400 DEG C. The mixed alkali metal titanous fluoride may be made by reducing an alkali metal hexafluotitanate, to which an excess of alkali metal fluoride has been added, with metallic titanium at elevated temperature or, if an alkali metal (e.g. potassium) pentafluotitanate is required, by hydrogen reduction of alkali metal (potassium) hexafluotitanate.
