Abstract

A process for the recovery of metal from scrap containing volatile metals wherein the scrap is melted by controlled oxidation of solid carbon by means of a gas containing at least 30 per cent by volume of oxygen, e.g. oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, and heated to such a temperature that most of the volatile metal present is removed by volatization, the combustion condition being so controlled that the gaseous products form a mixture substantially non-oxidizing to the said volatile metal. If zinc is to be vaporized from brass scrap the temperature will be above 1150 DEG C. and the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide ratio in the gaseous products will be at least 500. When the initial material contains lead the temperature will be above 1650 DEG C. and the said ratio any value appreciably over zero. When the initial material contains a copper alloy of cadmium the temperature will be above 800 DEG C. and the said ratio above 2.5. When the initial material contains a copper alloy of antimony, the temperature is above 1400 DEG C. and the said ratio any value appreciably over zero. It is preferred to use charcoal as the solid carbon in the process. Specification 582,506 is referred to.
