Abstract
In the production of magnesium by reduction of magnesium oxide &c. with carbon, the magnesium is condensed from the furnace gases by suddenly cooling the gases by contact with anhydrous salts or mixtures, preferably in solid form, which are inert to magnesium and melt at temperatures below the boiling point of magnesium. Anhydrous magnesium chloride, or double salts such as carnallite, may be used. Powdered salts may be blown into the gases by means of an inert carrier gas, or the gases may be passed through a shaft into contact with granular salts carried on a grating through which fused salt and entrained magnesium flow, the composition of the melt being preferably so regulated that a fused layer is maintained on the surface of the collected metal.
