1303468 Reducing metal-oxygen compounds RUTHNER INDUSTRIEPLANUNGS AG 27 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 56610/70 Heading C7D A metal-containing material is reduced by heating to below the melting point of the metal by an amount of a gaseous hydrocarbon such that the carbon and hydrogen together are sufficient for complete reduction of the material, but not the carbon alone. The material may contain several metals to produce an alloy, or may contain inert ceramic substances to produce a cermet. Direct heating may be supplied by burning excess hydrocarbon. The exhaust gas may be burnt to pre-heat the material, and/or, if necessary after drying, may be used as a protective gas for the cooling products, after which it may be recycled to the furnace. The starting material may be Fe 2 O 3 or NiO and the hydrocarbon may be CH 4 or C 3 H 8
