Abstract
502,543. Furnace atmospheres. CHUBB, W. F. Sept. 20, 1937, No. 25482. [Claes 61 (ii)] In the heat treatment of metals an atmosphere gas is passed through a body of material located within the heat-treating chamber and of such a nature that it will react with moisture or other harmful constituent it may be desired to remove from the gas before it contacts with the metal. Carbon, e.g. in the form of charcoal, and finely divided steel and iron in the form of turnings, borings, &c. are suitable for the removal of moisture. The apparatus shown consists of an open-topped container 1 having a gas supply pipe 5 welded thereto and extending down to the bottom of the container.
