Abstract

1383832 Defluorination of phosphoric acid AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 9 Feb 1972 [15 March 1971] 5997/72 Heading C1A Wet process phosphoric acid containing from 0À3% to. 3% by wt. of F, from 0À8% to 2À7% by wt. of Al 2 O 3 and a P 2 O 5 content of 45-62% is defluorinated by mixing with silica of surface area at least 10 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and heating to 75-105‹ C. but below the boiling point of the mixture, volatilizing the SiF 4 produced into an inert gas by intimately contacting the mixture with the inert gas such that the stripping ratio (defined) of the SiF 4 above 1À5 and the dissolved Si concn. is maintained below 0À05%, and maintaining the inert gas stream at a temperature above its dew point until it is removed from the acid mixture. Preferred inert gases are air, CO 2 , N 2 or Ar and the acid mixture may be sprayed into a stream of gas or the gas sparged into the acid to volatilize the SiF 4 .
