Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction of phenol derivatives with iso-butene or a gas containing the same is effected in the presence of a sulfocarboxylic acid as a catalyst, which inhibits side reactions and polymerization and can be reused, to produce alkylphenols efficiently.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a phenol derivative as p-cresol with iso-butene or a gas containing the same such as B, B gas containing 35% of iso-butene is conducted in the presence of a catalyst of sulfocarboxylic acid as sulfosalicylic acid to produce an alkylphenol as 2.6-tert.buty1-4-methylphenol. The catalyst is preferably 20 W 90% aqueous solution and the amount used is less than 0.1% based on the reaction system and 1 W 20% based on the phenol derivative and the reaction temperature is preferably 60 W 90°C.
EFFECT: The washing and purication operation of the reaction mixture is simple and iso-butene in B,B-gas can be utilized as a starting material.
