Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent precipitation of chromium compounds and thereby prevent corrosion of an apparatus in the production of alcohols by the hydration of lower olefins in the presence of an acidic aqueous solution of phosphoric acid containing dissolved chromium compounds, by restricting concentration of iron in said acidic solution.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of an alcohol by the hydration of ≤12C aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic olefins at a temperature of 100W350°C, preferably 100W 300°C, in the presence of an acidic aqueous solution containing 0.1W20 wt.%, preferably 1.0W5.0 wt.%, of phosphoric acid, which contains dissolved chromium compounds; precipitation of the chromium compounds is prevented by restricting the concentration of iron in said acidic aqueous solution of phosphoric acid below 10 ppm, whereby the alcohol is produced without corrosion of materials of the reaction apparatus.
