Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a highly pure cyanuric acid, in an industrial scale, without purification with a mineral acid, by dissolving urea in a lower alcohol, and decomposing in sulfolane at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Urea I is dissolved in a 1W4C lower alcohol or a mixture of ≥ 30wt%, pref. ≥50wt% of a lower alcohol and sulfolane. The solution is introduced into a heat-stable sulfolane heated at 180W250°C, pref. 190W220°C, to effect the heat-decomposition of urea to affore cyanuric acid II. The cyanuric acid thus prepared contains ≤1wt%, usually ≤0.5wt% of cyanuric acid amide which is a by- product produced by the action of ammonia, and can be used without purification, i.e. the hydrolysis of the impurities with a mineral acid.
