Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce greatly sulfureous nitrogen compounds in waste water by taking advantage of a biological nitrification reaction to form nitrous acid from ammonia present in waste water.
CONSTITUTION: The waste water discharged in the wet desulfurization treatment following dry denitrification treatment of flue gas is heat-treated at 60°C or more in an acidified pH range of 4 and less than 4 to hydrolyze sulfureous nitrogen compounds present in waste water. Then, the waste water is subjected to the usual biological nitrification process to form nitrous acid from ammonia present in waste water, and then the nitrous acid formed is reacted with the products of hydrolysis in an acidified pH range of 4 and less than 4. Thus, sulfureous nitrogen compounds present in the waste water can be reduced.
