Abstract

PURPOSE: To simultaneously reduce sulfur and nitrogen compounds as well as COD in waste water, by hydrolyzing waste water containing sulfur and nitrogen compounds by acidic heat treatment and adding nitrite ions.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water containing sulfur and nitrogen compounds discharged from wet type waste gas denitrification and desulfurization equipments or the like is heat treated above 60°C at an acidic zone below pH 4 to permit sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the waste water to be hydrolyzed. Next, nitrite ions such as potassium nitrite and nitrous acid gas is added to react with the hydrolyzed products, then sulfur and nitrogen compounds as well as COD in waste water are reduced at the same time.
