Abstract

PURPOSE: To simultaneously decrease sulfur and nitrogen compounds as well as COD in waste water, by treating waste water containing sulfur and nitrogen compounds at high temperatures in acidic zone in the presence of nitrite ions.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water containing sulfur and nitrogen compounds discharged from wet type waste gas denitrification and desulfurization equipments or the like is heat treated at high temperatures above 60°C, preferably above 80°C at an acidic zone below pH4, preferably below pH3, in the presence of nitrite ions by adding aqueous potassium nitrite solution or nitrous acid gas or the like. The process hydrolyzes sulfur and nitrogen compounds in waste water and the hydrolyzed products react with nitrite ions, thereby decreasing sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the waste water. At the same time, COD in the water decreases.
