Abstract
Ferro-silicon particles having a major percentage of round or globular particles with a smooth surface, are obtained by spraying melts containing 10-25 per cent Si and 0.08 to 0.5 per cent Al. These particles are especially useful for preparing heavy media for sink/float separating processes. Gas or vapour pressures of 6-13 atmospheres and temperatures of 1200 DEG to 1600 DEG C. are preferred in the atomizing step. Ferro-silicons outside the above ranges can be used by suitably adjusting the composition before spraying, such as by the addition of SiO2 containing material to remove all or some of the Al by oxidation. If all the Al is removed the appropriate amount must be added to the melt before spraying.
