Abstract
Spheroidal graphite cast iron is obtained by introducing beneath the surface of a bath of cast iron, a stream of inert gas containing a mixture of calcium carbide of particle size passing 20 mesh and having 90 per cent retained on 200 mesh and magnesium of particle size passing 20 mesh and having 90 per cent retained on 100 mesh, the amount of magnesium being 5-15 per cent of the mixture. The metal may be treated with calcium carbide alone to remove sulphur before the mixture is injected. A rare earth substance, e.g. a rare earth metal oxide, may be present in the mixture, in amount between 5 and 15 per cent. The gas used may be any gas which does not react with iron or magnesium at the temperatures employed, e.g. dry nitrogen, and the mixture may be present in such amount to give 1/4 -2 cubic of gas per pound of mixture.
