Abstract

Iron and steel ingot moulds are coated with a mixture comprising one or more carbonaceous substances and at least one substance having sufficient water of crystallization and constitution or either, that the coating contains a portion of said water before casting even when the coating has dried under the effect of the room temperature or of the temperature of about 60-80 DEG C. of the mould following on a previous casting operation. The water-containing substance is preferably borax or boric acid or a mixture thereof and the carbonaceous materials, e.g. charcoal, peat, mineral carbon, cellulosic material, sawdust, molasses or vinasses may be used in powdered or liquid form. When the carbonaceous material is not exclusively carbon it may be treated with caustic soda to convert the non-carbon into fusible alkaline salts which are entrained in the melt. Particular compositions comprise charcoal, natural graphite, caustic soda, molasses, and borax or boric acid or a mixture of both in various proportions.
