Abstract

Zirconium hydride is prepared by mixing zirconium oxide with excess of metallic magnesium, placing the charge in a closed retort, evacuating air from the retort and from the charge and replacing it with hydrogen, thereafter gradually heating the charge to reduce the zirconium oxide particles to hydride, withdrawing the hydrogen gas from the retort and establishing a vacuum, continuing the heating until magnesium is evaporated from the charge, re-admitting hydrogen into the retort and cooling the charge in a hydrogen atmosphere. The charge may be heated in the initial heating step to 600 DEG C., the heating being continued gradually until the temperature reaches at least 900 DEG C.; and the hydrogen pressure in this step may be 15 lbs. per square inch.ALSO:Metallic zirconium is prepared by mixing zirconium oxide with excess of metallic magnesium, placing the charge in a closed retort, evacuating the air from the retort and from the charge and replacing it by hydrogen, thereafter gradually heating the charge to reduce the zirconium oxide particles to hydride, withdrawing the hydrogen gas from the retort and establishing a vacuum, continuing the heating until magnesium and hydrogen are removed from the charge and cooling the charge in a vacuum.
