Abstract
A secondary emissive electrode comprising a body of silver-magnesium alloy in which silver predominates is subjected to a pretreatment by superficially oxidizing it until it exhibits a golden to bluish interference colour before introducing it into the envelope of an electron discharge tube. The alloy may contain 20 per cent magnesium. In the pretreatment, the silver-magnesium body is placed in a metal holder inside a hard glass heating tube which is then evacuated. A little oxygen is then introduced and the body heated slightly to form a thin film on the surface thereof; the oxygen is then pumped out and the body baked in vacuo. Oxygen is then again introduced at a pressure of 10-2,000 microns, preferably 50-150 microns, and the body is heated for 40-50 mins. by a high frequency coil to 500-700 DEG C., preferably 600-700 DEG C. The heating tube is then cooled to room temperature and the pretreated body removed. Specification 526,731 is referred to.
