Abstract

Thorium is manufactured by mixing the oxide thereof with calcium, melting the calcium in an inert gas to cause it to react with the oxide and liberate free thorium, cooling the mixture, leaching, and drying the powdered metal produced. The reaction may be carried out by placing the reaction mixture in a cup of refractory metal, e.g. molybdenum, enclosing the cup in a closed container, for instance of silica glass, evacuating the container and introducing inert gas therein and heating the mixture to the reaction temperature, e.g. by a high frequency induction coil placed round the container. A suitable reaction mixture contains 98-100 per cent excess of calcium over that theoretically required for the reaction. The mixture, after cooling, may be leached with a mixture of acetic acid and water, the residual thorium powder being washed and dried and, if desired, compacted by pressing, melting and working to the desired shape.
