Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1\Ia,1'. 21, 1922.
Application filed February 9, 1921. Serial No. 443,548.
To all w]: am it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT Hronrrr, a
Asker, near Christiania, Norway, liave invented certain new and useful'lmprove- -ments in Electric Induction Furnaces for Smelting Metals and the like; and'lfdohereby declare the followingto be a'full, clear,. and exact description; ofthe invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawin and to letters or figures of reference mar ed thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to induction furnaces for smelting metals and the like, and the invention consists therein that the smelting takes place in a closed chamber, which is connected with a compressor or evacuator for the purpose of performing the smelting under vacuum or under any desired pressure and in any kind of atmospheres.
For this purpose the annular vessel serving to take up the charge is enclosed in an air-tight shell or jacket preferably consisting of thin sheet metal or the like and connected with a pipe conduit by means. of which the vessel may be put in communication with a suction or pressure device.
on the drawing a form of the invention is illustrated.
l "is the magnetic core, 2 the primary winding and 3 the smelting channel (the secondary) in an ordinary induction furnace. Thesmelt'ing channel 3 is as usual provided with a refractory lining 4, and the lining according to the invention is provided with; an air-tight jacket 5 of sheet metal. To this jacket is connected a suction or pressure pipe 6 by means of which the jacket may be evacuated or put under pressure, or may be filled with different gases.
Claim:
An induction furnace comprising an annular charge containing vessel having an annular smelting channel formed therein, an air tight jacket closely conforming to and enclosing the vessel, a primary winding and a magnetic core outside of the jacket, and means to evacuate the space within the jacket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT HIORTH.
Witnesses:
GEORGE G. FULLER, JOHN L. SULLIVAN.
