Abstract
541,147. Distilling metals. LANCASHIRE METAL SUBLIMING CORPORATION, Ltd.. and HAMILTON, W. B. May 13, 1940, Nos. 8564 and 10036. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XI] An induction furnace for carrying out metallurgical processes comprises an inner lining or crucible 10 of firebrick, an outer shell 11 of porcelain with a packing of slag wool 13, and a hood 26, 31 sealed by a rubber gasket 36 which is cooled by the circulation of water through a hollow flange 32. The shell 11 is supported on a porcelain base 14 with an interposed rubber gasket 15.- Porcelain insulators 20 are supported between rings 18, 19 and carry a high frequency coil 21 of copper tubing through which cooling water is circulated. A condenser 25 is supported on the crucible, and is of smaller diameter than the crucible to limit expansion of the vaporized material. The lid 28 is apertured at 29 to permit the creation of the required vacuum in the furnace. The hood is double walled' and water is circulated through the jacket. In a modification, a conduit for cooling water may be provided in the shell 11 adjacent to the gasket 36.
