Abstract

<PICT:0970559/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0970559/C6-C7/2> A nozzle 20 of a vacuum degassing vessel 10 comprises a metal shell 37 and refractory lining 38 composed of a plurality of refractories arranged in superimposed courses supported on means such as a metal ring 45 affixed to the lower end of the shell 37. High alumina refractories 38a are disposed side by side in the lowest course each having a groove 46 in its outer face to embrace the lining support means. As shown in Fig. 4, each of these latter refractories has a hexahedronal shape with four rectangular side faces and a pair of trapezoidal end faces 47, 48, one pair of side faces 51, 52 being parallel, the other pair 49, 50 non-parallel, the wider of the parallel faces 52 having a transverse groove 46 parallel to end faces and disposed a greater distance from one end face than the other. The shell 37 (see Fig. 2) of the nozzle 20, which may be removed from the vessel 10 for relining by separating the lap-butt joint at the junction of refractories 38c and 38d, may be surrounded by a plurality of metallic creepage rings 44, covered by a refractory jacket 42, and may have weld spots 40 on the inner face thereof, as described in detail in Specification 970,557.
