[Also in Division H5] In a vacuum electric arc furnace arrangement having a plurality of exchangeable crucibles each provided with a cooling jacket, the crucible exchange is carried out by means of a horizontal rotary movement of a holding or carrying means for the crucibles, the crucibles being applied to and removed from the chamber of the furnace with a vertical linear movement. In the arrangement shown, two holders 19 for crucibles 12 with their surrounding cooling jackets 11 are connected to a cylinder 18 which can be hydraulically raised and lowered on a guide pillar 17. At the conclusion of a melting operation the cylinder 18 is lowered to remove a crucible with its molten charge from the furnace chamber 5 and is then rotated to carry the crucible to a cooling position at which the ingot is removed. At the same time a fresh crucible which may contain a new melting electrode 20 is moved into position below the furnace chamber 5 and is applied thereto by raising the cylinder 18. The new electrode can then be secured to the end of the rod 2 and drawn into the furnace chamber into the position 6. Three, four, or more holders 19 may be provided. An arrangement with four holders (Fig. 3, not shown) provides three cooling positions or alternatively two cooling positions serving two furnaces. The holders 19 may be replaced by a plate on which the crucibles and their cooling jackets are fastened.
