Abstract

817,414. Arc furnaces. TRIGGS, W. W. (National Research Corporation). March 7, 1957, No. 7556/57. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXII] A furnace for arc-melting reactive metals, e.g. titanium, comprises a crucible housed within a vacuum-tight chamber, at least one electrode, and a massive electrode support having an axial water passage the end of which terminates at least five inches from the electrode, the wall of the support defining the passage at its lower end being at least one inch in thickness. As shown, a vacuum-tight furnace chamber 10 having a vacuum pump 9 and an inert gas supply 11 houses a counterweighted crucible 12 which can pivot about a trunnion 14 to pour molten metal into a mould 16. The crucible 12 comprises a steel jacket 18, refractory insulation 20, a graphite crucible 22 and a solid titanium skull 24 which holds a pool of the metal maintained molten by arc electrodes 26. Massive electrode supports 28, e.g. of copper, extend through a vacuum-tight joint 32 in the chamber 10 and are provided with heat shields 30. A water passage 34, in which is located a pipe 36, extends axially through the support 28 and ends so that it is a substantial distance, e.g. some inches, above the melt surface when the support is in its lowest position. Cooling water flows downwardly inside the pipe 36 and upwardly outside the pipe. A rod 40 connected to a pneumatic cylinder 42 is attached to each support 28 and permits raising and lowering of the support thus allowing it to clear a heat shield 44 provided over the crucible 12. The skull 24 is provided with a stud 46 which extends through the crucible 12 to connect with a massive conductor 48 which engages, in the melting position, a stationary cooling block 49 having a passage for a cooling liquid. Specification 689,726 is referred to.
