520,434. Distilling metals. MEYER, L. W. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 17, 1938, No. 30057. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] Volatile materials such as iodine and light metals such as ma'gnesium and beryllium are obtained by heating a charge consisting of their ores or compounds and reducing agents under reduced pressure in a high frequency induction furnace at over 1000‹C. and condensing the vapour on a metal surface the temperature of which is regulated by radiation. In the apparatus shown, the reaction vessel or crucible 1, which is mounted in a jacket 6 and heated by a coil 8, is surmounted by a cover 12 which may be blackened or provided with cooling ribs and from which is spaced a water-cooled dome 7. The apparatus is exhausted through a pipe 11 through apertures 10, 13, and the product is condensed against the cover 12.
