Abstract

685,683. Metal-coating furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., DOVEY, D. M., and HYDE, P. W. July 20, 1949 [July 20, 1948], No. 19449/48. Class 51 (ii) [Also in Group II] A furnace for introducing a metal into the surface of another metal or alloy by heating the latter in the presence of a volatile compound, e.g. a halide, of the former, comprises a vessel 1, an electrically heated muffle 2, a top cover for the vessel, a perforated support 8 for the latter metal carried by supporting means 7 and spaced from the bottom of the vessel 1, on which bottom is supported the source of the former metal, means 4, 5 to permit the supply of reactive gas, a high temperature resistant fan 11 near the top of the vessel, and a guide skirt 13 surrounding the charge, the arrangement being such that the fan circulates the furnace atmosphere over said source of metal and over the metal to be treated and through the guide skirt. During operation, hydrogen and chlorine are admitted at 4 and 5 at a rate only sufficient to prevent ingress of air. If aluminium, is to be introduced into another metal, it is supported in a refractory container.
