Abstract

529,544. Electric furnaces. BERGHAUS, B. June 2, 1939, No. 16318. Convention date, June 8, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] Metals, for example magnesium, copper, chromium, and tungsten, are obtained by heating a mixture of metal compounds and a reducing agent such as carbon, silicon, or ferrosilicon by means of an electric glow gas discharge at reduced pressure which may be 0.01 - 40 mm. of mercury. The gas may be hydrogen, supplied continuously or intermittently, and the mixture may be in the form of pressed bodies. In the apparatus shown, the mixture is treated in a crucible 17 insulated in a furnace 2 provided with gas inlet and outlet 24, 26, cooling jacket 4, and inspection window 7, the source of current being connected to the metal wall of the furnace and to the crucible. The metal may condense on the furnace wall 2 and may be removed intermittently or continuously, in which latter case it is cooled in an evacuated chamber. In a modification, for the treatment of pressed bodies, the bodies may be mounted on a quartz plate in the furnace and the electric discharge may be between the furnace wall and an insulated electrode mounted therein. The gases formed during the reduction may in some cases be drawn off directly from the crucible.
