Abstract

504,097. Electric furnaces. BERGHAUS, B. Aug. 26, 1938, No. 25093. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 39 (iii)] A melting-furnace working under reduced pressure is heated by a gaseous electric glow discharge. The material to be heated is contained in a conducting crucible 2 which is connected as a cathode in a direct current discharge, and mounted in a metallic chamber 4 which forms the anode. The crucible 2 is supported by three members such as 5, 6, Fig. 1. These supports conduct electric current to the crucible 2 from the cables 9, are hollowed for water cooling, and are provided with spaced metallic sleeves 8 and screening caps such as 15, 16. A cooling jacket 28 and a vacuumtight inspection window 31 are provided for the vacuum vessel 4. The heating effect of the discharge is regulated by a thermo-element 17 mounted in a depression in the base of the crucible 2, and insulated and screened from the discharge. In a modification, the mounting of the thermo-element 17 acts as the sole support and current supply means for the crucible 2. In a further modification, auxiliary electrodes passing through the wall of the chamber 4 are used as the anode. The furnace also may be operated using alternating currents.
